Sola church ruin (Sola ruinkirke).
Sola ruin church, also referred to as Sola old church, is located in Sola municipality Rogaland. It was built around 1150 in stone and was in use until 1842, when it began to decay.
In 1871 the ruin was bought by an artist and was converted into a private home with a painting studio. When German armed forces took possession of the area and nearby Sola Airport, it was suspected that the church ruin may be used by allied bombers as a reference point on air raids. Therefore it was decided to demolish the ruin. Fortunately, the Germans left the stones as a mound on site and marked each stone and its place of origin.
During the 1980s reconstruction work, managed by the National Heritage Board, begun with an archaeological excavation of the church ruin, as a first step. Between 1992 and 1995 the former church was reconstructed mainly by using the existing stones.
